The Government of Illinois consists of Executive, Legislative and Judicial Branch.

The Government of Illinois is fortified by the Constitution of Illinois which is the fourth and current draft adopted in 1970.  On August 26, 1818 the first constitution was adopted and later ratified in 1848, 1870 and 1970 [1].

The Executive Branch of Illinois

The Executive branch comprises of six elected officers and their various departments. The six elected officers are Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller, and Treasurer.

The Governor of Illinois is the chief official of executive branch of Illinois. He has the supreme executive power and is responsible for the faithful execution of the laws. The Governor serves the state for four years and is directly elected by the residents of state. The Governor is directly responsible for enacting laws passed by General Assembly. [2].

Office of Governor of Illinois

The Lieutenant Governor of Illinois is the second highest executive and is directly elected by votes. If the Governor dies or removed from office, the Lieutenant Governor becomes the Governor. Lieutenant Governor serves as the chairman of the Governor’s Rural Affair Council, Chairman of Rural Bond Bank of Illinois, Head of the Illinois Main Street Program and Chairman of Illinois River coordinating council.

Office of Lieutenant Governor

The Attorney General is the highest legal officer of the state of Illinois. Attorney General is elected by votes and is responsible for providing legal counsel to the Governor and General assembly.[3].

Office of the Attorney General

The Secretary of State manages one of the largest computer databases in Illinois, keeping track of approximately 8.7 million drivers; 11 million registered vehicles; 466,000 corporations; 230,000 limited liability entities; 159,000 registered securities sales-persons; and 16,000 investment adviser representatives. The office also is an important resource for educating citizens about issues that affect their everyday lives, including anti-drunk driving, traffic safety, school bus safety, securities fraud, literacy, and organ/tissue donation.[4].

The Legislative Branch of Illinois

The General assembly of Illinois is the Legislative branch which comprises 118 member Illinois house of representative and 59 members Illinois Senate. They have the power to enact, amend laws and to pass resolutions. The House consists of 118 representatives elected from legislative districts for two year terms. The State Legislature has the authority to make laws and indict judges. The Illinois Senate consists of 59 Senators elected from Legislative districts.

The Illinois Auditor General is a legislative officer who keeps a vigil on spending of state and is appointed by General assembly. The Secretary of state supervises the House session and leadership votes.

The Judicial Branch of Illinois

The Judiciary of Illinois is responsible for maintaining the law of Illinois.

The Supreme Court of Illinois

The Supreme Court of Illinois has all the executive and decision-making authority over all the courts in Illinois. It hears appeals from Appellate Court and Circuit Courts and makes the original jurisdiction. It consists of 7 Justices for the term of 10 years and the chief justice is elected by the court from its members for a three-year term.

Illinois Judicial Branch consists of Supreme Court, Appellate Court and Circuit Courts.

The Appellate Court

The Appellate Court is the court for first hearing of civil and criminal cases. Three judges hear each cases and consensus of two is required to make judgment. The Appellate Court has 52 judges in five districts. Appellate judges are elected from the five judicial districts for 10-year terms.

The Circuit Court

The Circuit Court is trial court of original jurisdiction. It is composed of circuit and associate judges. There are 24 judicial circuits in Illinois, each having one chief judge nominated by the circuit judges. Circuit judges may hear any case dispensed to them by the chief judge. Associate judges may not supervise over criminal cases unless authorized by the Supreme Court. Circuit judges are elected for six-year terms and they appoint associate judges who serve four-year terms.

Illinois Department of Public Health was created in 1877 to regulate medical practitioners and to promote sanitation. The department is headquartered in Springfield. Illinois Department of Transportation

Illinois Department of Transportation is responsible for strengthening the roads, railways, airways, canals and   terminals such as airport and railway station.  Illinois Department of Agriculture

Illinois State Police

Illinois State Police is the police force of Illinois and established in 1922. It promotes public safety to improve the quality of people of Illinois. The mail police academy is located in Springfield. It has four departments which comprises of Administration, Forensic Services, Internal Investigation and Operations.

Taxes in Illinois

The major source of revenue in Illinois comes from property tax which is a local tax imposed by local government imposing taxes on districts which includes municipalities, counties and special taxation districts. The Department of Revenue serves as the tax collection agencies for state government and for local government.
