The Government of Illinois is fortified by the Constitution of Illinois which is the fourth and current draft adopted in 1970. On August 26, 1818 the first constitution was adopted and later ratified in 1848, 1870 and 1970

The Executive Branch of Illinois
The Executive branch comprises of six elected officers and their various departments. The six elected officers are Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller, and Treasurer.
The Governor of Illinois is the chief official of executive branch of Illinois. He has the supreme executive power and is responsible for the faithful execution of the laws. The Governor serves the state for four years and is directly elected by the residents of state. The Governor is directly responsible for enacting laws passed by General Assembly.

The Legislative Branch of Illinois
The General assembly of Illinois is the Legislative branch which comprises 118 member Illinois house of representative and 59 members Illinois Senate. They have the power to enact, amend laws and to pass resolutions. The House consists of 118 representatives elected from legislative districts for two year terms. The State Legislature has the authority to make laws and indict judges. The Illinois Senate consists of 59 Senators elected from Legislative districts.

The Judicial Branch of Illinois
The Judiciary of Illinois is responsible for maintaining the law of Illinois.
The Supreme Court of Illinois
The Supreme Court of Illinois has all the executive and decision-making authority over all the courts in Illinois. It hears appeals from Appellate Court and Circuit Courts and makes the original jurisdiction. It consists of 7 Justices for the term of 10 years and the chief justice is elected by the court from its members for a three-year term.

The Appellate Court
The Appellate Court is the court for first hearing of civil and criminal cases. Three judges hear each cases and consensus of two is required to make judgment. The Appellate Court has 52 judges in five districts. Appellate judges are elected from the five judicial districts for 10-year terms.

The Circuit Court
The Circuit Court is trial court of original jurisdiction. It is composed of circuit and associate judges. There are 24 judicial circuits in Illinois, each having one chief judge nominated by the circuit judges. Circuit judges may hear any case dispensed to them by the chief judge. Associate judges may not supervise over criminal cases unless authorized by the Supreme Court. Circuit judges are elected for six-year terms and they appoint associate judges who serve four-year terms.
